Oobleck Science Experiment: A Fun and Easy Activity For Kids

If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with your kids, the oobleck science experiment is so easy and you probably already have the ingredients in your home for this one!

Oobleck science experiment is from the Dr. Seuss book Bartholomew and the Oobleck. If you’re looking for a rainy day activity, this is it! This classic science experiment for kids uses only 2 ingredients and you probably already have them in your kitchen! Keep reading to learn how to make this fascinating goop!

What Is The Oobleck Science Experiment?

I use to make this when I worked in daycare. It’s such a fun and oh so easy experiment for kids 2 years old and up. I personally love this because it only uses food ingredients, so if it gets in your little one’s mouth it’s no big deal! Without getting into the nitty gritty, Oobleck is simply a solid AND a liquid. Depending on how you use it and the amount of pressure you put on it, it will act as a liquid and a solid. Pretty cool huh? I honestly can’t tell you why it works this way, but it’s so fun to play with, it’s easy to make, and the clean up is fairly easy. Win-win-win! Oh, and I’m betting you will enjoy it too mama!😉

Oobleck Science Experiment Ingredients:

  • 2 cups cornstarch
  • 1 cup water

Yup, that’s it!

Instructions

Mix the cornstarch and water into a bowl. Mix until your Oobleck is formed. That’s it. I added a bit more cornstarch, but the above ratios are a good place to start. I got the ingredients ratio from The Best Ideas for Kids blog!

Tip: If you find the Oobleck is too watery, add more cornstarch. If it’s not drippy add a tad more water. You can totally play with the ratio.

Using your Oobleck

We used some of my kid’s toy kitchen utensils to play with the Oobleck. We watched it drip through our fingers and we even made it into a ball. If you tap it quickly with your finger or a spoon it feels hard. If you gently put a spoon in it scoops like a liquid. It is a really cool science experiment, I think even big kids and teens would appreciate it! Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
