Unique Valentine’s Day Ideas For Kids
In a world that tells you not to celebrate Valentine’s Day because it’s a MaDe Up HoLiDaY, I say be the light! It’s fun to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your husband, spouse, partner, AND your kids. (And whoever else you want to celebrate with!) Honestly, in this absurd world we live in, I’m all for celebrating anything and everything. So if you’re wondering what to do on Valentine’s Day with your kids, I’m sharing 10 fun and unique Valentine’s Day ideas below to help you have fun with your kids this year, without going overboard and spending too much money.
1. Heartfelt Breakfast
I’m usually not one for perfect, Pinterest-worthy food, but hearts are a simple shape so give this one a try. Start your day with a little extra love by making heart-shaped pancakes, toast, or even fruit (strawberries work best.) You can use cookie cutters or simply arrange the food into a heart shape. Think a bunch of blueberries in the shape of a heart. Add a drizzle of syrup, some sprinkles, or a dollop of whipped cream to make it extra special because why not? It’s Valentine’s Day!
2. DIY Valentine’s Cards
I’m not a fan of store bought cards because they are overpriced and they end up in the trash anyway. So, skip the store-bought cards this year and have your kids make their own! You can keep this simple with minimal supplies if that’s your jam too. Just gather some construction paper, markers, stickers, and glitter (if you’re feeling brave), and let their creativity shine. They can make cards for family members, friends, teachers, or even neighbors. You might want to check out my blog post, 14 Valentine’s Day Crafts for Kids for even more inspiration!
3. Love-Themed Storytime
Gathering some Valentine’s themed books is SO simple yet so heartfelt and gives you and your kids a chance to really bond. So head to your local library and find some books about love and kindness, then snuggle up to read. Some great picks include Construction Sight: You’re Just Right by Sherri Duskey Rinker, Llama Llama I Love You by Anna Dewdney or Little Blue Truck’s Valentine by Alice Schertle. This truly is an easy and cozy way to embrace the holiday’s spirit and if you have any other great Valentine’s Day books for children, let me know in the comments section below, please!
4. Bake and Decorate Sweet Treats
I mean, Valentine’s Day isn’t all about candy and sweets, but it’s up there right? Plus who doesn’t love a little baking and enjoying sweet treats? Whip up a batch of sugar cookies or cupcakes and let your kids go wild with frosting and sprinkles. It’s a super fun activity and a delicious way to enjoy the holiday together. Oh and bonus tip: package up extras to share with friends or family!
5. Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt
Kids LOVE scavenger hunts and the best part is, it’s a super simple activity to put together. It can also help you get a minute to yourself, mama. Create a simple, but heartfelt scavenger hunt by hiding paper hearts around your house with little love notes in them. If you have older children, you could even put fun clues in the hearts leading to a small prize or toy for your kids, like a homemade treat or a Valentine’s Day themed shirt. No matter what your kids find at the end, it will be a blast!
6. Kindness Challenge
While kindness should be encouraged all year round, Valentine’s Day is a great way to focus on it and talk more in-depth about it. With that said, encourage your kids to perform small acts of kindness throughout the day. Some ideas include, drawing a picture for a friend or their sibling, giving extra hugs, helping a sibling or classmate, or calling a grandparent just to say “I love you.” Whatever you choose to do, big or small, make sure to remind your child that these things that are important to do all year long!
7. Movie Night with a Valentine’s Twist
Make your Friday Movie Night Valentine’s Day themed! End the day with a cozy family movie night featuring a feel-good film about love and friendship. Some great options include Beauty and the Beast, Gnomeo & Juliet, or Charlie Brown’s Valentine. Snuggle up with blankets, turn out the lights, and obviously add popcorn and those Valentine’s Day treats you made for extra fun. I bet this will be a tradition that lasts for many years!
8. Love Notes Surprise
Everyone loves a little surprise love note! So, write a short love note for your kids and tuck it into their lunchbox, coat pocket, or under their pillow for a sweet surprise. These notes might not seem like much, but I’m sure they will have a lasting impression on your kids and will mean a whole lot! It’s the simple things right? You can also have your kids write notes for family members too. It’s a great way to encourage gratitude and love! See, Valentine’s Day isn’t all that bad!!
9. Simple Valentine’s Crafts
I think Valentine’s Day has the best and easiest options for crafts and homemade decor, so get crafty and give it a try. You can keep it really simple by making paper heart chains in Valentine’s Day colors, decorating a “love jar” filled with sweet messages, or creating handprint art for keepsakes. If crafting isn’t your thing, remember it’s about the fun and the process, not the final project. It’s not about perfection so just have a good time creating these memories with your kids!
10. Dance Party with Love Songs
Have a dance party because honestly, who doesn’t love dancing?! A dance party is great for a variety of reasons, but make this Valentine’s-themed obviously and dance your heart out or get close with your kids and slow dance a bit. Put on some timeless songs about love and have a dance party in your living room or kitchen for as long as you’d like. Classic songs like L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole or Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis are great options, but don’t forget fun kid-friendly songs too! I’m sure “Alexa” will be able to find some great tunes for you and your kids to dance to.

You don’t have to dish out expensive gifts that your children probably don’t even need or decorate your house to perfection either.
