What is a Reset Day?
First, let’s discuss what a Reset Day is exactly. Habits & Homes describes a reset day or reset routine as “a day to get everything in your life back in order.” Basically, you’re picking one day a week, maybe a Sunday, take a portion of that day, and set aside time to press pause, regroup, and get straighten things out. Think of it as a mini restart button for your home, your mind, and your family’s routine. A time to clean up and catch up! It’s about creating calm from the chaos so you can start the week (or end it) feeling clear and in control.
What isn’t a reset day? Well, it’s not a total “catch up on everything” day. It’s more of a get intentional day, something you can look forward to. You do the small but meaningful things that bring your home and mind back to baseline. This can be laundry, meal planning, resetting routines, tidying hotspots, and maybe even prepping your mindset with a fresh podcast or journaling moment.

Why Moms Need Reset Days
Here’s the million dollar question: Why do moms need a reset day? Here’s the truth, moms are typically the heartbeat of the home. And when we’re constantly operating from a place of exhaustion, clutter, and mental overload, it affects everything. Without a reset day, life starts to pile up. Dishes overflow, schedules get disorganized and forgotten, and that low-key panic of “I’m behind on everything” creeps in.
Reset days can help moms:
- Prevent burnout before it builds
- Create a predictable rhythm to the week
- Reduce decision fatigue
- Bring back a sense of peace and control
- Show up more present for their family
It’s not about doing more. It’s about doing the right things consistently (remember the word intentionally I used early!) so your week flows with you instead of against you. And don’t forget, you can get and should have help with your weekly reset, whether it’s from your husband, kids, or everyone in your family. It’s important to work together on a reset day!

What My Weekly Reset Looks Like (And Why It’s a Game Changer)
My reset day is usually Saturday morning or Sunday, depending on the week, and sports, and stuff. IYKYK! I carve out 1–2 hours where I intentionally reset my space, schedule, and energy. Here’s and example of what I do:
🧺 Home Reset:
- Catch up on laundry that was missed earlier in the week (not all of it, just enough to feel caught up)
- Wipe down kitchen counters and tackle the “clutter zones”
- Do a light tidy of the living room and bathrooms
- Restock toilet paper/diapers, wipes, snacks, and fridge essentials

📝 Family + Schedule Reset:
- Review the calendar for the week ahead and get on the same page as my husband
- Meal plan and make a simple grocery list
- Coordinate any appointments, practices, or commitments
- Prep school bags or activity gear for the kids
🧠 Mental/Emotional Reset:
- Reflect on what worked or didn’t work last week
- Brain-dump all my to-dos and prioritize for the week ahead (write it down!)
- Listen to a motivational podcast or music while I tidy
- Revisit a mantra or affirmation
- Light a candle
This routine keeps our home from slipping into full-on chaos. It helps me feel like I am staying on top of everything before I’m utterly overwhelmed and living in chaos. It helps keep everything in order so my house never feels like a complete mess. By keeping up with it all weekly, a reset day only takes a little while to get everything cleaned up. Which for my family of 5 is so helpful and completely worth it!
