Why You Should Practice Self Care When You’re A SAHM
When you take care of yourself, you’re more likely to enjoy motherhood more, because your proverbial cup is full. Another reason it’s important (and this is my favorite one) is because when you take care of yourself, you’re teaching your kids that it’s ok for them to take care of themselves! To me, that is incredibly important. You want your kids to grow up knowing it’s ok to relax, recharge, and create healthy self care habits, right? So teach them by doing. Let them see their mother take care of herself by eating a real meal, taking a shower, and going out with her friends!

What Is Mom Burnout?
Before we dive into ways you can prevent mom burnout, let’s discuss what it is. Mom burnout is the feeling of complete and utter mental and physical exhaustion. It is feeling overwhelmed, resentful. snappy, and even rageful and angry, even though you are living the life you always wanted. And yes you can feel all these things and still love your children more than anything.
Mom burnout usually happens because you pour everything you have into your kids and your family, without doing anything for yourself. Most mothers admit that they do not take care of themselves because they feel too guilty. But I want to ask you, why would you feel guilty about taking a quick shower and eating a real meal? If you want to be the best mom possible, these are things you must do! There is no need to feel bad about taking care of yourself.
7 Clever Ways To Prevent Mom Burnout
Alright, mama, let’s dive in to the good stuff! Now you know what mom burnout is and why it’s important to try and prevent it. Now we are going to talk about quick ways you can reset and recharge right at home! You’ll be surprised what 5 minutes can do for your mood, mental health, and your ability to mother. If you’re ready to be the mama you always dreamed you’d be, then keep reading.
1. Prevent Mom Burnout with Breathing Exercises
Deep breathing can be extremely calming. To do this, find a quiet spot, sit comfortably, and practice deep breathing for 5 minutes. Inhale deeply for four seconds, hold for seven seconds, and exhale slowly for eight seconds. Repeat this cycle for five minutes or so. This can help reduce stress and refocus your mind so you can get back to your children with a clear mind and clean slate!
2. Stretch and Move
We know how beneficial exercise and moving your body is these days. Prevent mom burnout simply by standing up and doing some light stretching or a quick yoga sequence. Focus on areas that typically hold tension, like your neck, shoulders, and back. Even a few minutes of stretching can boost your energy and improve your mood. And that’s great for you AND your children. Are you seeing already how taking care of yourself is also beneficial for your kids? 🙂
3. Mindfulness Moment
People don’t realize how healthy it is to be mindful! It’s not hard either. Try having a mindfulness moment by sitting down with a cup of tea or coffee, closing your eyes, and focusing on the present moment. Be intentional! Pay attention to your surroundings, the taste of your drink, and your breath. This brief mindfulness practice can help center your thoughts and give you a refreshing mental break.
4. Listen to Music or a Podcast
I don’t know about you, but listening to music can change my mood so quickly! This might be my favorite tip. Take five minutes to listen to your favorite song or a few minutes of your favorite podcast episode. Music (and dancing!) can be incredibly uplifting, and a short podcast can provide inspiration or a brief escape. Either way, choose something that brings you joy or relaxation and be in the moment.
5. Step Outside
Being outside is so good for your health in many ways. If possible, step outside for a few minutes everyday. Fresh air and a change of scenery can do wonders for your mood. Take a short walk around your yard, garden, or even just stand on your porch. Pay attention to the sights and sounds of nature. Be present in the moment and enjoy the fresh air and vitamin D from the sunshine! It will help reset your mind for the next few hours of parenting.
6. Journal
Get a specific notebook for this and spend five minutes a day writing in a journal. You can jot down your thoughts, list things you’re grateful for, or set a small goal for the day. Journaling can help clear your mind and provide a sense of accomplishment and perspective. Even journaling what you need to do for the day can help take the mental load off your brain so you remember to do certain things and feel accomplished when you get them done!
7. A Quick Craft or Hobby
Just because you’re a mom doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a hobby! Engage in a small craft project or hobby that you enjoy every single day, mama! Whether it’s knitting a few rows, doodling/painting, or working on a puzzle, spending a few minutes on a creative activity can be very fulfilling and provide a mental break. Plus, you deserve to do something you love. Need help finding a hobby? Check out this blog here.
