Why Positive Habits Matter for Stay At Home Moms

Before we dive into my 10 best positive habits for moms, let’s talk about why positive habits matter! Being a stay at home mom means you’re constantly pouring into everyone else right? Your kids, your home, your husband, maybe ever your friends get the best version of you. And because of that, it’s easy to forget about you in the process. Over time, that can lead to mom burnout, frustration, and feeling like you’ve lost yourself in the daily routine. That’s where positive habits come in. By building small, intentional habits into your day, you can bring more peace, purpose, and joy into motherhood! These habits help you stay grounded, create structure, and remind you that you matter too. Because a happy, healthy mom makes for a happier home and kids.

10 Positive Habits For Stay At Home Moms

Here are my favorite positive habits that I think every stay at home mom should include in her daily life. If you’re ready to feel less overwhelmed and more like you, then this is your blog! Keep reading these tips and make sure to let me know in the comment section below what positive habits you’re going to add into your day. Start showing up as the mom you want to be!

    1. Start Your Day with Intention

Starting your day on the right foot is crucial to how the rest of your day will go. Instead of rolling out of bed straight into chaos, try setting aside just 10 minutes in the morning for yourself. Whether it’s journaling, stretching, sipping coffee in peace, or saying a quick prayer, starting your day with intention helps you feel grounded before the demands of the day take over. I use to be totally against waking up before my kids, but recently I started waking up 15 minutes before them to get a quick work out in and WOW has it been a game changer!

    2. Get Dressed (Even Just a Little!)

This is my favorite one. It’s a great way to start your day with intention (especially if you don’t want to wake up too early!) Get dressed, mama! You don’t need a full face of makeup or fancy clothes, of course, but changing out of your pajamas can make a huge difference. Getting dressed signals to your brain that it’s time to start the day and helps boost your motivation and confidence. I always get dressed and put on a little mascara to help me feel more like me.

    3. Prioritize Daily Movement

Moving your body is a positive habit you shouldn’t skip out on. Exercise doesn’t have to mean an hour at the gym, either. I know you don’t have time for that! It can be a stroller walk, a dance party in the kitchen, or a quick yoga session during nap time. Moving your body regularly increases your energy, improves your mood, and helps reduce that feeling of being “stuck.” You might be surprised how much better you feel with a little bit of movement added to your daily routine.

    4. Create a Simple Routine

Routines are everything when you’re a stay at home mom. Having a daily rhythm gives both you and your kids a sense of stability. You don’t need a strict schedule, but knowing what to expect each day (like morning playtime, lunch, nap, and outdoor time) helps everything flow smoother, plus did you know it can reduce tantrums!? It can also help reduce decision fatigue for you. I have many blogs about routines, just use the search bar to find what you’re looking for. You can also grab my free daily schedule download below.

      5. Practice Gratitude

There’s a lot to be thankful for, but it can also be easy to forget when you’re overstimulated. When motherhood feels too overwhelming, focusing on small moments of joy can shift your mindset. Try writing down three things you’re grateful for every night, or even share them at dinner with your kids. Gratitude helps you see the good, even on tough days. And sharing gratitude with your kids, teaches them to be thankful. It’s a win-win!

      6. Take Breaks Without Guilt

Some of the best advice I’ve been given is that guilt is a choice, so choose to not feel guilty over the little things, likes taking a break. You are not a machine, you’re a mother. Taking short breaks throughout the day, whether it’s sitting in silence, scrolling guilt-free for a few minutes, or enjoying a cup of tea, helps you recharge so you can show up better for your family! Yes, it’s ok to let your kids watch TV for a little bit so you can take a breath!

      7. Declutter Your Space

I’m all about having a home that looks lived in, but I’m also all about keeping that home cleaned up. That’s because a cluttered home can lead to a cluttered mind. Plus clutter makes me super anxious! Take 10 minutes a day to tidy one area of your home or get rid of items you no longer use. You’ll be amazed at how much calmer you feel when your environment is lighter and more organized. Also, take pride in your home and space! Keep it clean and keep your energy calm.

      8. Set Small, Achievable Goals

All moms deserve to have goals! But, instead of trying to tackle a huge list, pick one or two main goals for the day. Maybe it’s doing one load of laundry, reading to your kids, or cooking dinner early. (Let’s be real, maybe it’s cooking a dinner that’s not frozen nuggets.) Anyway, small wins build momentum and help you feel accomplished.

      9. Nurture Your Own Interests

Always remember you’re more than a mom. That means you can do things just for you that make you happy. Take time for something that’s yours each day, even if you only have 10 minutes. It could be reading, painting, baking, or even learning something new online. The list is honestly endless! Feeding your passions and hobbies keep your identity strong and your spirit alive, so you can continue to show up as the mama you want to be.

        10. End Your Day with Reflection

End your day on a positive note, the same way you start it! Before bed, take a moment to reflect on what went well in your day. Instead of focusing on what you didn’t get done or what you did wrong, celebrate the small victories. Think about all the things you did right, because I’m positive it outweighs the things you messed up on. This way, you’ll go to sleep with a lighter heart and wake up with more motivation!

        Final Thoughts

Building positive habits doesn’t mean overhauling your life overnight. If you want it to work out and stick, it’s about taking small, intentional steps that make your days feel a little more peaceful, balanced, and fulfilling. As a stay at home mom, you give so much to everyone else, but by choosing habits that nurture your mind, body, and soul, you’re also giving your best self back to your family. And that’s a huge win! Start small, stay consistent, and watch your everyday mom life transform for the better.
