Make Mom Life Easier In 10 Simple Steps

While meeting your basic needs is a great way to start lessening overwhelm, this isn’t what this blog is about! These aren’t your typical “drink water” or “wake up before your kids” tips (though those have their place). These are creative, sanity-saving ideas that just might change everything. If you don’t believe me then you definitely have to keep reading. And make sure to let me know what your favorite tips are in the comment section below.

1. Create a “Done List” Instead of a To-Do List

Let’s shift your mindset a bit. Think about it, you already do a lot, all the time. And a lot of that stuff is on autopilot you forget that those things matter. Like washing dishes and folding laundry. So, when you get these things done, try writing it all down as you go because it can feel incredibly validating. Like if you didn’t get around to folding the laundry, who cares? You kept your kids alive, fed them 3 meals, cleaned out the fridge, and made a dentist appointment. That all counts so write it on your “done list!”

👉 Try keeping a running “done list” on your phone for a week. It’ll shock you (in the best way).

2. Pick a Daily “Uniform”

Decision fatigue is real and we are all more comfortable wearing certain things. So create a mom uniform that’s easy, comfy, and realistic for you. Creating a go-to outfit formula such as, leggings and an oversized tee, joggers and a hoodie, or jeans and a sweater, takes the guesswork out of getting dressed everyday. Which I highly recommend doing, but that’s another blog for another day.

👉 Prepare your outfit the night before so you can feel put-together without wasting 15 minutes staring into your closet.

3. Use a Rolling Cart as a Mobile Mom Station

You know those white rolling carts are that are all over social media recently? Give one a try, you can get them right on Amazon. Put diapers, wipes, snacks, chargers, cups, crayons, your coffee mug, whatever you need often onto the cart. It all lives on one 3-tier cart that rolls with you from room to room which means no more running around like a chicken every time someone needs something!

👉 It’s giving: “Mom has her life together vibes.” (Even if you don’t.)

4. Have a “Reset Room”

Every single mom needs a quick 5 minutes reset every single day. I promise you are not alone if you feel so immensely overwhelmed sometimes that you want to scream. So, pick one room, probably your bedroom, and do your best to keep this space tidy and peaceful. When the rest of the house looks like a toy explosion, this room will be your sanctuary. You might be surprised how grounding it feels to have one space that’s not in chaos. Go to this room when you’re feeling overstimulated, turn out the lights, and just take a few deep breaths.

5. Set a Timer for Transitions

Transitions are hard for children, but luckily timers are fun! If you have kids who melt down when they don’t know what’s coming, a timer can help. Set one for 5 minutes before you have to clean up, give baths, or get ready for bedtime. This can help ease the shift of transition times. We use Alexa in our house to set timers and it’s fun for my kids, plus they have a little control over when to start the timer, how long it can be (reasonably of course) and they can turn it off.

👉 This can work for YOU, too. Set a timer to scroll, clean, or zone out, and when it goes off, you move on guilt-free!

6. Declutter Just 5 Things a Day

Declutter can offer a huge sense of control and help you tidy up certain spaces. And a tidied home helps lessen overwhelm, which can help make mom life easier. But let’s do this…forget about the full-blown purge you do once or twice a year. Try decluttering daily or every other day. Just pick 5 things a day to donate, toss, or relocate. By the end of the month, that’s 150+ fewer things in your way! And since you’re keeping up with it, your home will feel tidier more often.

👉 It adds up fast and makes your space (and brain) feel clearer. Ahhhhh!

7. Use Grocery Pick-Up Like a Boss

We live in a day in age when we can order groceries online and that’s pretty cool. Seriously. While I truly believe kids do need to go out in public to learn, well, how to act in public, there’s also no need to drag them through Target just to grab milk and bananas. That can be exhausting, plus more money because let’s face it, we know you’ll find something else you don’t need. So, order online, pick up in peace, and avoid spending $87 on things you didn’t need. Plus get yourself a little treat to enjoy while you sit in your warm car.

👉Mom hack: make a weekly grocery list and save it in the app (or write it down if you’re old school like me.) Boom! Brain space freed.

8. Record Voice Notes to Yourself

If you haven’t tried this one, you’re missing out. Forget trying to remember everything, it’s impossible! Use voice recordings and talk into your phone like your future self is your assistant. Here are a few examples of what you could record for yourself:

“Remind me to bring a change of clothes for Liam’s field trip on Friday.”
“Add oatmeal and baby shampoo to the grocery list.”

👉 Less mental clutter will help you remember other important things. You’ll be less stressed trying to remember everything.

    9. Keep a “Boredom Box” in Your Closet

While kids should feel bored sometimes because this helps them find their creativity and use their imagination, sometimes they need a little push to get there. That’s where a “Boredom Box” comes in. Fill it with random things your kids don’t usually use like, puzzles, magic clay, craft kits, or a new coloring book. Bring it out only when you really need it! Like on rainy days or when you’re feeding the baby or need to cook dinner and TV limits are up.

👉 This can be pure magic. The novelty of it keeps kids engaged longer than usual and they will probably use their imagination and keep playing too!

    10. Build a Personal “Reboot Ritual”

What is a reboot ritual? I’m glad you asked! It’s a simple way to help you reset when you’re having a tough day. If you’re on the verge of flipping out on your kids, a personal reboot ritual can help you calm down so you don’t snap or feel guilty later. What you’re going to do is pick about 3 quick things that help you calm down and reset. For example, these can be, drinking something cold, stepping outside for fresh air, or playing your favorite song/music. Knowing you have these things to help you reset can help you manage the tough days with grace!

👉 You don’t have to wait until bedtime to feel better. A five-minute reboot can shift your whole vibe.

    Final Thoughts

Being a mom is hard and we all have days that challenge us, but being a mom shouldn’t overwhelm you every second of every day. Motherhood isn’t something you conquer. It’s something you grow through, day by day. These little shifts won’t make it all perfect (nothing will, perfection doesn’t exist). But they will help make mom life easier. And when you give yourself permission to simplify, systemize, or get a little creative, you make more room for peace, presence, and joy.
