I Started Selling My Clothes on Poshmark and This is What Happened

Last Christmas I was looking to try and make some extra cash for gifts. I decided to download the Poshmark app, join the community, and start selling my clothes. Here’s my story of what happened once I started using Poshmark.

What is Poshmark?

If you’ve never heard of Poshmark, it’s a social buying and selling app that focuses mostly on second hand clothes, shoes, and accessories (jewelry, bags, etc.) You post your clothes you no longer wear to your Poshmark “Closet,” give it a description, and name your price. The clothes are added to your profile for others to search and see.

How it works

Once you’ve added items to your closet you have to start gaining followers and sharing your items. It’s fairly simple to gain new followers, as people are on Poshmark to find deals on great items. The app has a few features that make it easy to find new people to follow and people usually follow you back if you follow first.

The “share” option lets you share your own items to your followers and you can share other Posher’s items, too. When you share other’s items, they will typically return the favor, meaning your items have now been shared with even more Poshers.

Selling my clothes

What I’ve learned in the last year I’ve been a part of the community is it’s definitely a way to make some extra cash, but that cash is by no means “fast cash.” It’s actually a lot of work! You need to be on the app and sharing often. Sales can ebb and flow, one week I’ll have 3 sales then I might not have another for a month or two.

The app does offer lots of tips and tricks to make sales, but I honestly think it’s just luck. You have to share, share, share, and just hope the right person sees your item.

It’s a fun app, for sure! And I made over $100 in my first few months. But there’s not much consistency and it takes a decent amount of work. Overall though, if you’re looking to clear a few things from your closet, I’d definitely recommend trying it out!

I joined Poshmark with a vision to only sell, but my shopping bug got the best of me (plus the amazing prices help!) I mean I bought a pair of like-new Hunter rain boots that are $150 brand new, for $85! It’s a great way to get designer brands at deeply discounted prices, or to buy a dress for a wedding that you know you’ll only wear once.
