Why Is Self Care Important for Struggling Stay At Home Moms
Why is self care important for SAHMs? Well, for a variety of reasons! In this blog I’m going to share some of those reasons and help you start to focus more on you so you and your family can thrive!
Why is self care important for stay at home moms? Honestly, there’s a million reasons! The role of a stay at home mom is one of the most demanding yet rewarding jobs out there. Nurturing, educating, and raising a family is a 24/7 commitment that often leaves little time for oneself. However, amidst the chaos, joy, and those demands, it’s crucial for SAHMs to prioritize self care. Self care isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity that can empower moms to not only survive but truly flourish in their roles. Want to be a better mom? Ready to be the mama you always thought you would be? Then keep reading to learn why self care is so important and how you can implement it into your daily routines!
The Essence of Self Care
Self care entails consciously engaging in activities that promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being. While being fully devoted to your family is admirable, neglecting yourself in the process can lead to burnout, stress, and a decline in overall health. Just as an empty pitcher can’t pour water, a mom depleted of energy and joy cannot effectively care for her family. Effectively is the key word here, because yes, you can give and give to your child(ren), it’s what moms do, but you cannot give your all if you don’t care for yourself as well. And I truly don’t feel it should be glorified either.
Why is Self Care Important
Let’s dive into the different ways you can practice self care as a stay at home mom and how to fit it in to your daily life! Because self care isn’t just about massages, pedicures, and nights out; self care is about all the little things you do each day to truly take care of you! Basic needs or not, any way you take care of yourself is important.
Prioritizing Physical Health
- Exercise: Regular physical activity is a powerful stress-reliever. It can boost your mood by releasing endorphins and increase your energy levels. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga session, or a dance workout, find an activity you enjoy and make it a part of your routine.
- Nutrition: Nourishing your body with balanced meals provides the energy required to keep up with the demands of motherhood. Incorporate fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet to fuel your body and mind. Stop surviving off of coffee and your toddler’s left over crust! You deserve more.
- Rest: Sleep is a cornerstone of well-being. Prioritize a good night’s sleep. I know staying up for “me-time” after your kids are in bed is always nice, but consider getting your kids to be around 7-7:30 PM so you have plenty of time for you at night. A well-rested mom is better equipped to handle daily challenges. If you are in a stage of motherhood where you’re waking up throughout the night, consider a power nap during the day or taking time to just sit and rest for 10 minutes.
Caring for Emotional Well-being
- Alone Time: While being around your family is wonderful, having time for yourself is equally essential. Engage in activities you love, whether it’s reading, painting, journaling, or simply relaxing in a quiet space.
- Social Connections: Maintaining relationships with friends and engaging in adult conversations can provide a refreshing change of pace. Social interactions offer emotional support and a sense of belonging.
- Mindfulness and Meditation: Practicing mindfulness and meditation can help you stay present, manage stress, and enhance your emotional resilience. Even a few minutes of deep breathing can make a noticeable difference in your outlook.
Nurturing Mental Wellness
- Learning and Growth: Stimulate your mind by pursuing interests outside of motherhood. Whether it’s taking an online course, reading informative books, or engaging in creative projects, continuous learning enhances self-esteem and keeps your mind sharp!
- Set Goals: Define personal goals that are separate from your role as a mom. These could be career aspirations, hobbies, or even personal challenges. Working toward these goals gives you a sense of accomplishment and purpose. I have a course that can help you with this HERE.
- Seek Professional Help: If you find yourself struggling with persistent feelings of stress, anxiety, or sadness, consider reaching out to a mental health professional. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness!
