Luckily there are ways to reduce the overwhelm and become a better version of yourself. I’m glad you asked! Good habits can help you keep up with all the messiness of mom life. They help you be more productive, focus on yourself and your kids with more enthusiasm and heart. Good habits can even help you feel less overwhelmed. They are also great to teach your kids how to create good habits for a healthier lifestyle, too! Below are 6 really good habits you can start today and below I’ll go deeper into why each habit is important.

    How do you create good habits for stay at home moms?

    In all honesty, it’s as simple (and not as simple) and just starting. You have to create the habits by doing the same things over and over until they become so second natured, you don’t even think about them anymore. So, that’s why it’s a great idea to sign up for my email list (above) because it can help you create those daily routines and schedules that will help you create those good habits. As a stay at home mom of 3 kids, I’ve found that these good habits help me be a better version of myself. I’m happier and less overwhelmed when I stick to these 6 things…

    Here are 6 amazing habits that will help you be a more happy stay at home mom and actually enjoy this difficult role! I honestly don’t think motherhood has to be as hard as everyone says. Will there be challenging moments? Yes, of course, that’s just life. But everyday shouldn’t feel like an uphill battle. Creating these habits are great for you AND your kids to start feeling better and be able to peacefully coexist with each other.

    1. Get yourself ready for the day

    Get yourself ready for the day, every single day! I personally recommend taking a shower, getting dressed, putting on a little makeup, and fixing your hair. If you don’t have a time for a shower though, that can be crossed off the list. However, the thing that CANNOT at any cost be forgotten, is getting dressed! You will feel so much better if you get out of your PJs and put on something else, even if it’s just leggings and a hoodie. Even if you’re not leaving your house. Just get dressed. I promise, you will be surprised at how “normal” and better you feel!

    2. Create a really good schedule

    When you have a good schedule, you’ll actually get done all the things you need to get done. Planning out your day will help you be productive and prepared. And schedules are great for young children too! A daily schedule can help reduce tantrums and power battles with your toddler, because they will have control of their day. You can read about that here though. Ultimately, humans are creature of habit anyway. We tend to thrive on “sameness.” And when we create a schedule, it will help us maintain these great habits!

    3. Write down everything you need to do each day

    Every morning, write down all the things you need to do for that day, big and small. Mom brain is REAL! And writing things down will help you brain dump everything so you will feel less overwhelmed trying to remember all the things you need to do. When things are written down it can help you sort of “set it and forget it.” You’ll feel more at ease and you won’t have to worry about forgetting anything.

    4. Clean up as you go

    Clean your house as you go about your day. I always find it to be much easier to clean smaller messes more often throughout the day. Set up at least 2 times a day (or 3) where you kind of reset. For example, after lunch, clean any dishes in the sink, pick up the toys on the floor, and tidy up a bit. Then do that again at the end of the day. When there aren’t as many dishes in the sink, you’re most likely to actually wash them. If you just let them pile up in the sink all day and have a huge pile of dishes to wash after dinner, it’s going to feel daunting and miserable. And then you probably won’t do them at all.

    Keeping up with these small chores can help you really get them done. And when your home is more tidied up, you’ll feel less anxious and overwhelmed. This article dives into the mental health benefits of having a clean home. I’m not saying your home needs to be perfectly clean, that’s not possible with young kids. And I promise my home looks very lived in! But when everything is put away, it really helps life everyone’s mood!

    5. Do one load of laundry everyday

    This is similar to cleaning up as you go about your day. Doing one small load of laundry everyday feels a lot less daunting then doing 5 loads on the weekend. Or waiting and waiting until your out of underwear and before you know it you have 3 weeks of laundry piled up. Then when you try to wash, dry, and fold it you don’t want to because it will take forever.

    For my family of 5, I do one load of laundry every single day and it helps me avoid the “laundry chair” or throwing clean laundry on to the floor to maybe fold another day. And honestly, the hardest part is folding, but when it’s only 5 to 7 days of laundry it really only takes 5 minutes. And I live by the quote “Do what you NEED to do before doing what you WANT to do.” (I’m not sure who originally said that so I can’t take credit for it!) But it helps when I need to get stuff done. I kind of bribe myself and say, ok if I fold this laundry, then I can watch TV, or scroll Instagram, or eat some ice cream.

    6. Get out of the house everyday

    This is a really, really important one! It’s great for your AND your kid’s mental and physical health. Even if you just play in the backyard, it counts! Maybe sometimes getting out of the house is just going for a drive to grab a coffee. And then other times it’s going somewhere fun like a park, Target, or a friend’s house. Either way, try to get out of your house for at least 30 minutes each day. Pencil it into your daily schedule so you’ll actually do it!

    Creating good habits doesn’t have to be all that difficult! It starts with creating that daily schedule and adding all the things that are really important to you to it. Then you can work on creating these habits so they naturally become part of your daily life. Before you know it you won’t even be thinking of these things, they will just come and you’ll just do them!
