Is laundry consuming your life, mama? In this blog I’m sharing how to keep up with laundry in 3 super simple steps. Keep reading!
Keeping up with laundry… It seems to be the bane of every mom’s existence. It piles up slowly, well actually it piles up really fast. Then, it never seems to get put away. It sits in the washer for way too long only needing to be re-washed. It’s never-ending!
But what if it doesn’t have to be that way?
What if I told you I don’t have the “special chair” with clean laundry sitting in it. I don’t throw piles of clean laundry onto the floor every night so I can sleep in my bed. I don’t re-wash it and let it sit in the dryer for days. Oh, and have I mentioned I have 3 kids and a husband, so a family of 5 I do laundry for?
Don’t get me wrong – it’s still never ending and I’m not trying to toot my own horn. I am always doing laundry. Always. But that’s just it: I’m always doing it. And while that might seem exhausting, I’m going to tell you my top 3 secrets of how I keep up with it. If you can do these 3 things, you will keep up with all the laundry in your house all the time. It starts with a solid routine and a bit of motivation. Ready to kiss that mountain of laundry goodbye? Let’s go!
How To Keep Up With Laundry
Let’s learn 3 easy ways to keep up with your family’s laundry so you never have to worry about it again! These are 3 things I do to stay on top of it for my family of 5. Let me know in the comments if this blog was helpful and you’re going to try these laundry tips out!
1. Sort It
Sort your laundry into different categories. For me, I sort it like this: Towels, my clothes, kid’s clothes, husband’s clothes. They stay sorted in their own hampers so when it’s full I can grab it and bring it to the laundry room. When all the clean clothes are going back to the same place, it makes folding and putting them away less overwhelming, meaning you’ll actually do it. So sort it in a way that makes sense for you.
2. Do One Load Every Day
This step is key. Do one load of laundry every single day. That means wash, dry, fold, put away. I try to put a load in the washing machine in the morning, switch it to the dryer midday/nap time, then fold it when my kids go to bed. When I fold it, I put the clean folded clothes right back into the laundry basket, it makes it easier to put away. And I admit, those clothes don’t always get put away immediately. Sometimes they are put away the next morning, especially if it’s my kid’s clothes.
But by doing a load of laundry each day, it means you have less clothes you’re washing. This means it’s less daunting to fold and put away! Just think how much easier putting away 5-7 days worth of clothes is compared to 2 or 3 weeks of it.
I should add though too (and this is a good one): You can take a day or two off each week if you keep up with this routine! I make Fridays my “no laundry day.”
3. Delegate the Laundry
I know I mentioned that I do all the laundry, meaning I sort it and throw it in the washer and dryer. Then I fold it. But since my older 2 kids are, well older, I’ve been having them put their clean clothes away. It’s a chore for them and it helps me out! I have had to let go of the fact that their laundry is not perfectly folded in their dressers but it’s not my dresser, so it’s ok. I love the idea that it’s teaching them some responsibility!
Extra Tip:
Here’s one extra tip to lessen the laundry load (pun intended!): Reuse/rewear certain clothing! We use bath towels two times before washing them. Other things we may rewear are a pair of jeans, pajamas, and a sweater or sweatshirt. Unless of course they are noticeably dirty or smelly, wearing things twice is really no big deal. Especially pajamas….having my kids wear those twice helps keep their mountain of laundry that much smaller and has made all the difference.
Final thoughts:
There you have it. Three insanely easy ways to keep up with your laundry. Keep this up and you will feel so much less overwhelmed. I promise! Of course there will be days to add in the random things like blankets, bedding, or anything that got unexpectedly dirty. But you’ll be prepared because there’s not a mountain of it somewhere else. It’s really as simple as just doing it, but if you have smaller loads to do at a time, it will feel much more doable! Let me know in the comments if you’re going to try this!
